The Middlefork

Editor’s Choice Award ~ Poetry.com  ~ June 2004

The Salmon runs are gone
This who knows was probably foretold
The Sheepeaters have been gone for long
Grizzlies and wolves cannot fit the mold
Their day still struggles to last
But it has long since been past
The country is not the same
The old timers work is being swept away
Their fields were once ripe with hay
Now knapweed covers the way
What will it be like in my children’s day
