I wonder

Thunder rolls across the sky
Lightning fractures the stone grey
And I wonder

Heat bakes into the ground
Sweat rolls down my back
And I wonder

Ice slips under tires
I hold my breath and wait for traction to return
And I wonder

Wind strips red leaves
Tosses them to the ground leaving skeleton branches behind
And I wonder

A coyote yips at the moon
Its pack chorusing along with it
And I wonder

I feel the colt’s muscles bunch beneath
I tuck into my saddle as he bogs it down across the arena
And I wonder

The stars shine above me
Mocking the world below
And I wonder

I sit cross legged in bed
A bottle of wine at hand
And I wonder

I wonder where you are
Even though I know
You’re never coming back to me
