Home

I’m at home
In a classroom
Where the prof wears blue Carhart jeans
A different tie everyday
Paired with out of date cowboy boots
And a “life’s to short to worry” attitude

I’m at home
On a mountain trail
Where the wind howls against Woolrich and sweat
A crosscut over my shoulder and a clear trail at my back
Paired with a grime covered crew striding ahead
And a “there’s miles to clear before dark” attitude

I’m at home
In a newsroom
Where the speed is controlled chaos
A frenzy of people and stories and deadlines
Paired with the smell of cheap paper and ink
And a “get it done quick” attitude

I’m at home
On the green cliffs of Kerry
Where the waves crash a thousand feet below
A flashpoint of earth and water and sky where you can see the world fall away into itself
Paired with the low of cows and chatter of tourists
And a “there’s plenty of time left in the day” attitude

I’m at home
In a vet clinic
Where abscess and lacerations are the highlights of my day
A daily repetition of the same thing without it ever being the same
Paired with horny stallions and pissy mares
And a “ready for anything” attitude

I’m at home
On the back of a green colt
Where a calm trot can become a bogged down shit fit
A clash of wills and wits to see who wins
Paired with the smell of leather and horse sweat and sunscreen
And a “gonna win this fight” attitude

The problem with being at home
In so many places
Is

You don’t really have a place
That is truly home
Except for the soles of the shoes you wear that day
