War Dogs

We were brutal
We few survivors of the long war
Those first few years
We cried through blood caked faces
Then we had no tears left
We watered the fields with that same blood
Sowed the earth with bones and teeth
And when the long war ground to an end
We were put out
Like the beasts we were
We didn’t begrudge their fear
There was a justice to our exile
We of all people knew the truth
Of what we had become
Of what we would now always be
We rode into the dark forests
Into the wilds where the monsters roamed
In the deep shadows of twisted limbs
We weren’t’ the least of the beasts
But as we found out
We weren’t the worst of them either
